Basic perception and propagation characteristics of bone-conducted sounds presented to facial parts

چکیده

Abstract In conventional bone conduction (BC) devices, a vibrator is typically applied to the mastoid or condyle processes. Recently, however, BC-sound presentations facial parts such as nose have also been investigated. As face among most complex structures in human body, BC sounds presented are likely show different perception and propagation characteristics from those parts. We measured hearing thresholds, ear canal sound pressures both ears, head vibrations at processes when were (nasal, infraorbital region, zygomatic, jaw angle, chin) (mastoid forehead) of normal-hearing subjects. The results indicated that process had similar threshold characteristics. By changing stimulus on face, thresholds did not change, whereas amplitudes each component changed significantly.

Effects of rise-time of stimulus on auditory N1m to air-conducted, bone-conducted audible and bone-conducted ultrasonic sounds

condition elicited smaller N1m amplitude than the incongruent condition. In both hemispheres, the stepwise multiple regression revealed that the reduction rate of N1m amplitudes between the presented conditions correlated significantly with the source activities in motor and superior temporal areas. The present study suggested that some sensorimotor mediated prediction modulated auditory activi...

Hearing sensitivity in newborns estimated from ABRs to bone-conducted sounds.

This study focused on the problem of estimating hearing sensitivity in newborns from auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) evoked by clicks and 500 Hz and 4000 Hz tonebursts presented by a bone-conduction (BC) oscillator. The effects of acoustic energy transmitted to the ear canal, gender, and ear differences were also investigated. ABR thresholds for BC stimuli were 56, 52, and 53 dB (re 1 micro...

Perception of clearly presented foreign language sounds: The effects of visible speech

Learning the sounds of a foreign language is difficult. The experiments reported here investigated whether visible speech can help. The focus of the experiments was on whether visible speech affects perception as well as the production of foreign speech sounds. The first experiment examined whether visible speech assists in the detection of a syllable within an unfamiliar foreign phrase. It was...

Perception of disturbing sounds

Åsa Skagerstrand (2018): Perception of disturbing sounds: Studies from The Swedish Institute for Disability Research 89. The present thesis concerns the daily sound environment and the human perception of the same. The sound environment affects the possibility to be active in a communication. With background noise, it may be harder to hear desired signals, and when suffering from a hearing loss...
